18-Hour Course

Writing Effectively: Where to Begin?

Ask any teacher of English or, for that matter, any professional to choose between writing something or doing some other task and quite often one would find people choosing to do the other task. Why? One reason for this is that when students in our context are taught the writing skill the focus is more on correcting their grammar and spelling rather than on their effective communication in writing.

The aim of this workshop is to guide and help teachers, and others, to learn how to write effectively by adopting a systematic approach to writing. This approach will help the participants in sharpening their own writing skills and will provide a road map to teachers on how to develop their students’ writing skills for success in their future careers and for taking standardized English tests for studies abroad.

What will the course teach me?

The course will be a blend of theory and practice, whereby the participants will be put through a process of reviewing their own and their colleagues’ work to understand the issues in writing and to correct them. Broadly, the following areas will be covered:

  • Writing in a focused manner
  • Effective paragraph writing
  • Key aspects in essay writing
  • Basic grammar and punctuation
  • Editing
  • Analysis of paragraphs and essays written by the participants
