Tips on how to use Textbooks effectively for developing ESL and Learning Skills in the classroom

Textbooks play an important role in any educational system. Unfortunately, many textbooks produced in developing countries are not written well and they often lack adequate coverage of important concepts. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that teachers learn how to use textbooks effectively.


By the end of workshop participants will be equipped with the techniques of adaptation, individualization, variation, and learning to learn strategies.

They will be able to:

  • Use the Textbook as a source to serve different purposes for teachers
  • Use effective  strategies for  developing ESL skills by using Textbooks for  such activities as  dictation techniques, listening skills and pre reading strategies
  • Use activities that require learners to do more than just passively read.
  • Use Interesting and quick ways to involve learners in learning
  • develop better comprehension skills by using the text of text books

Fehmida Khadim, is an educationaist with specialized expertise in School Administration and Teaching of Pakistan Studies (History and Geography) in O level classes. She has been presenting at the SPELT International Conferences since 3 years. She is presently working as Deputy Director Training   of The Educational Research Institute (ERI). She is an active member of Finance Committee of SPELT. She is also member of IATEFL-[International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language ]. She has authored Two English Textbooks for STBB in collaboration with the SPELT team. She holds a Masters Degree in Economics from University of Karachi. She also holds Bachelor’s degree of Education (B.Ed.). She has recently completed ICELT from SPELT. She has conducted several workshops for the teachers of different levels.
