Strong Leadership Strong Institutions: An Inside Out Perspective
The presentation will discuss the broader context of change, sustainability, leadership theories, and leadership styles of head teachers in schools. It will shed light on how leadership, innovation, and change go hand-in-hand and the multiple and complex roles that they play to steer the middle management teachers to improve school standards and make it into an ever evolving learning organization. The talk will also analyze the impact made on them due to the change and the perception of change in implementing and sustaining it as seen by them.
Based on the concept of leadership and change, this paper will discuss the structural changes that were initiated in one of the branches of a renowned school, managed by an NGO which was located in a fairly low income area of Karachi and catered to the educational needs of students coming from a mediocre socio- economic background. The data were collected through a case study approach by using focus group interviews with the head teacher and10 staff in middle managerial positions and will locate the discussion in the broader context of change, sustainability, and leadership theories. Findings were analyzed under the four themes that emerged during the interviews and showed that the head teacher depicted transformational leadership style to a great extent to implement structural changes in spite of resistance and apprehension by the middle management teachers.
Prof Dr. Nasreen Hussain Chairs the Education Department at the Institute of Business Management, Karachi and brings to academia years of diverse teaching, administrative, research, and consultancy experience. She also heads the Office of Postgraduate Studies. Dr Hussain is an ardent SPELT volunteer. Her forte is in qualitative research methods with a special focus in field research. Inter alia, her specialization includes teacher education, strategic planning / educational planning, leadership development, and organizational learning.
